Himachal Pradesh witnessed a stunning transformation on Sunday evening as fresh snowfall blanketed popular destinations like Shimla, Kufri, Manali, and Chail. The snow not only marked the end of a ten-week dry spell but also brought immense joy to farmers, apple growers, hoteliers, and tourists. With temperatures dropping significantly, the state turned into a winter wonderland, attracting visitors from across the country.
Tourists thrilled by snow
Shimla received 2.5 cm of snow, covering famous spots like Mall Road, The Ridge, and Jakhoo Peak. Tourists flocked to these areas to enjoy the scenic beauty and snow-filled landscapes. Popular tourist resorts in Kufri, Fagu, Chansel, Narkanda, and Churdhar ranges also experienced their first snowfall of the season. In addition, Dharamshala recorded light snow on Monday.
Visitors expressed their excitement at witnessing the snow-covered mountains. Kanishka from Haryana’s Rohtak shared her delight, saying it was her first time seeing snow, which made the trip memorable. Another tourist, Kajal from Delhi, remarked that the snow-clad peaks looked like a painting and were an unexpected treat during her visit.
High-altitude areas like Tabo and Koksar reported freezing conditions, with temperatures plummeting to as low as minus 12.3 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, towns in lower altitudes such as Kasauli and Jubbarhatti experienced light rainfall, enhancing the winter charm.

While the snow boosted tourism, it also caused significant disruptions. The Himachal Pradesh Emergency Operation Centre reported that 15 roads, including two National Highways, were closed due to heavy snowfall. The Atal Tunnel, a key route in the region, witnessed the rescue of over 800 stranded individuals from 490 vehicles in Lahaul and Spiti districts.
The icy roads, however, led to unfortunate incidents. A tourist from Delhi, Bhishan Garg, tragically lost his life when his car skidded on a slippery road and collided with a parked tipper in the Lahaul Spiti district. Three others were injured in the accident, highlighting the challenges posed by the harsh winter conditions.
Despite the hurdles, the fresh snowfall brought festive cheer to Himachal Pradesh. Hoteliers welcomed an increase in bookings, while farmers and apple growers rejoiced in the prospect of improved yields due to the snow. The picturesque landscapes continue to draw tourists eager to experience the magic of a snowy winter in the hills.
