In a landmark achievement for digital connectivity, over 4,000 gram panchayats in Haryana have been equipped with broadband internet as of December 2024. This ambitious project, valued at ₹130 crore, is a joint initiative by the Central and Haryana state governments in collaboration with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL). The effort reflects a commitment to bridging the digital divide and empowering rural communities with access to high-speed internet services.

Key details of the initiative

During a meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Vivek Joshi on Tuesday, the state broadband committee reviewed the progress of the project. The initiative has successfully connected 4,055 gram panchayats with fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) internet connections, providing a robust platform for digital growth. A total of 31,741 FTTH connections have been installed in various government institutions, ensuring seamless digital access for public services.

To further bolster digital transformation in rural areas, each gram panchayat will receive 10 FTTH connections free of cost for two years from the installation date. These connections aim to enhance efficiency in governance, facilitate e-learning, improve healthcare access, and support other vital services. By offering free broadband services, the project reduces barriers to digital adoption, paving the way for improved socio-economic development.

The initiative is a part of the broader national agenda to promote Digital India. Haryana’s efforts align with the vision of making high-speed internet accessible to all, particularly in rural areas that often face connectivity challenges. This program ensures that underserved communities can leverage digital tools to enhance their quality of life.

Impact on rural development

The broadband connectivity project is expected to significantly impact rural governance and public service delivery. Enhanced digital access will streamline administrative processes, enable efficient communication, and provide platforms for digital skill development. Moreover, it opens up opportunities for rural entrepreneurs to access online markets, participate in e-commerce, and benefit from government schemes without delays.

The project’s implementation has also highlighted the importance of public-private collaboration in achieving large-scale infrastructure goals. With BSNL’s technical expertise and the government’s financial support, the initiative demonstrates how partnerships can drive impactful outcomes.

Haryana’s broadband connectivity project sets a benchmark for other states to emulate, showcasing the potential of technology in transforming rural landscapes. With over 4,000 gram panchayats now connected, the state is on a promising path toward inclusive digital growth, ensuring that no community is left behind in the digital revolution.
