Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath addressed a conference of women legislators from Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, encouraging them to leave a lasting legacy through their work. The event, held on Wednesday, brought together 56 MLAs, with 37 of them speaking about various issues in their constituencies. Yogi emphasized that the true legacy of a legislator is defined not by the length of their tenure but by the positive impact they make on society.

Encouragement for Women Leaders

Yogi highlighted the significant responsibilities of women legislators, noting that U.P. MLAs represent over six lakh people each, while their Uttarakhand counterparts oversee constituencies of three to four lakh individuals. He called this role a rare privilege and urged them to address real-life challenges faced by the public. He stressed that their words and actions in the legislature should set an example for future generations.

Describing U.P. as his "karmabhoomi" (land of work) and Uttarakhand as his "janmabhoomi" (birthplace), Yogi expressed gratitude for the chance to address the gathering. He also spoke about the state’s adoption of a paperless assembly through the e-Vidhan system, calling it a step forward in enabling experts from diverse fields to contribute to societal development.

Yogi praised Uttar Pradesh’s representation of women in politics, noting that 14-15% of its legislative assembly members are women, far above the global average of under 10%. He expressed hope that the recently passed Nari Shakti Vandan Act would further increase women’s participation in politics at both state and national levels.

Women’s representation in politics

The CM highlighted India’s historical commitment to women’s empowerment, recalling that Indian women received voting rights in 1952, ahead of countries like England. He noted that of the 15 women members in the first constituent assembly, four were from U.P. and Uttarakhand. These women played key roles in drafting the Constitution.

He also pointed out the high representation of women in local governance, with 56% of block pramukh positions and 70% of district panchayat chairperson roles held by women. He urged women legislators to focus on making informed decisions to drive social welfare and development.

UP Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana emphasized the importance of women’s active participation in legislative processes. He said that while discussions about women’s honor have been ongoing, real change comes through implementation, not just documentation. Mahana noted that modern politics requires expertise in various fields, and women’s involvement in the legislative process is at its highest level.

Uttarakhand Assembly Speaker Ritu Khanduri addressed the challenges faced by women in politics, such as being assigned “losing” seats in elections. Despite these obstacles, she expressed pride in the growing number of women in political roles across Uttarakhand, from panchayat heads to mayors. She called for a cultural shift to prioritize women’s safety, dignity, and equal rights. Khanduri encouraged raising future generations with values that respect and uphold these principles.

In conclusion, the conference highlighted the importance of women’s leadership and representation in politics, with a focus on creating a lasting legacy through meaningful action and informed decision-making.
