On Monday, January 13, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended Sankranthi celebrations at the residence of Telangana BJP president G Kishan Reddy in New Delhi. The event showcased the diverse harvest rituals celebrated across India under various names. Joining him were veteran actor Chiranjeevi and badminton champion PV Sindhu, making the occasion even more vibrant.

The festivities began with a ceremonial pooja and the lighting of a diya by PM Modi, accompanied by Chiranjeevi. According to ANI, the celebration also included the presence of several Union ministers and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. Singer Sunitha enthralled attendees with her soulful performance, followed by a series of classical dance showcases that highlighted India’s rich cultural heritage. A bonfire marked the culmination of the event, symbolizing the spirit of Sankranthi.

Videos shared by the news agency captured moments of camaraderie, such as Chiranjeevi walking alongside PM Modi to inaugurate the proceedings. The actor’s presence added a touch of glamour to the event, which was well-attended by political and cultural dignitaries. PV Sindhu, renowned for her achievements in badminton, further amplified the prestige of the gathering.

Chiranjeevi’s political journey

Chiranjeevi, a beloved figure in Indian cinema, has also had a noteworthy political career. In 2008, he launched the Praja Rajyam Party in Tirupati, aiming to bring change to Andhra Pradesh politics. During the 2009 Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections, his party secured 18 out of 294 seats and garnered over 16% of the vote share. By 2011, the party merged with the Indian National Congress, and Chiranjeevi took on the role of Union Minister of State for Tourism.

However, after 2014, Chiranjeevi stepped back from active politics. His brother, Pawan Kalyan, now serves as the Deputy Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, representing the Jana Sena Party in coalition with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Upcoming projects in Cinema

While Chiranjeevi has largely distanced himself from politics, his contributions to Indian cinema continue to thrive. The actor was last seen in the 2023 hits "Waltair Veerayya" and "Bholaa Shankar." He is currently preparing for his next venture, a socio-fantasy film titled "Vishwambhara." Originally scheduled for a Sankranthi release, the film’s debut was postponed to accommodate his son Ram Charan’s film "Game Changer."

Chiranjeevi has also greenlit a project directed by Srikanth Odela, known for his unique storytelling. Rumors suggest that the actor may collaborate with Boyapati Srinu on another ambitious project, further solidifying his status as a stalwart of the Telugu film industry. His fans eagerly await these upcoming ventures, which promise to deliver the high-octane performances he is celebrated for.

The Sankranthi celebrations in New Delhi underscored Chiranjeevi’s enduring appeal as a cultural and cinematic icon. His presence alongside PM Modi and PV Sindhu highlighted his ability to bridge the worlds of entertainment and politics. As he continues to make strides in cinema, Chiranjeevi’s legacy as a trailblazer in both fields remains unshaken.

The event also served as a reminder of India’s unity in diversity, showcasing how festivals like Sankranthi bring people together to celebrate shared traditions. With Chiranjeevi’s upcoming projects and his son Ram Charan’s rising prominence in the film industry, the Mega family continues to leave an indelible mark on Indian cinema and culture.
