The ongoing Mahakumbh in Prayagraj, known for its grandeur and spirituality, is making headlines for reasons beyond faith. Swami Anand Swaroop, the head of Shambhavi Peeth and Kali Sena, has alleged that nearly 50% of the sadhus participating in the Mahakumbh are fake. He claims these individuals, wearing saffron robes, lack basic knowledge of spirituality and have tarnished the sanctity of the event.
During a live media interaction, Swami Anand Swaroop expressed his concerns about the increasing presence of impostors posing as sadhus. He criticized them for not knowing even the simplest of mantras and called for action from the Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad to remove them from the Mahakumbh. "It is better to have fewer true sadhus than to let fake ones ruin the event," he stated.
The Swami also raised concerns about social media influencers, particularly YouTubers, who have turned the holy gathering into a hub for viral content. "Mahakumbh is meant for spirituality, not for reels," he emphasized. According to him, these influencers spread misinformation and disrespect the sanctity of the event.
One of the most talked-about individuals at the Mahakumbh is Harsha Richhariya, a model and event host, who became a sensation after being referred to as the "most beautiful sadhu." Harsha gained attention when she appeared on a chariot alongside sadhus during the Amrit Snan ceremony, dressed in saffron robes. This act sparked outrage among traditional sadhus, including Swami Anand Swaroop, who criticized her for misrepresenting herself as a sadhu.

Swami Anand Swaroop clarified that Harsha's participation in the ceremony was inappropriate as she had not taken full renunciation vows. He stressed that becoming a sadhu requires adherence to traditions and principles. He also revealed that Harsha left the Mahakumbh voluntarily after being advised to uphold these spiritual values.
Harsha Richhariya, who had been participating in rituals with Swami Kailashanand Giri before the Mahakumbh, clarified her stance. She stated that she has only taken guru diksha (initiation) and has not yet embraced full renunciation. Harsha expressed her disappointment with the backlash, claiming she came to Mahakumbh out of faith but faced criticism and hostility instead. She was even seen crying in response to the negative attention.
In her statement, Harsha highlighted that her intention was to understand Sanatan Dharma and strengthen her spiritual connection. However, the controversy forced her to leave the Mahakumbh. Despite the challenges, she remains committed to her faith and spirituality.
The Mahakumbh has always been a symbol of devotion and unity. However, the controversies surrounding fake sadhus and social media activities have raised questions about preserving its sanctity. Swami Anand Swaroop's call for stricter regulations and accountability highlights the need to maintain the spiritual essence of this sacred event.
