The Gujarat government has formed a high-level committee to draft a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) for the state. This step follows the recent implementation of UCC in Uttarakhand and aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of uniform personal laws for all citizens.
The five-member committee is led by retired Supreme Court Justice Ranjana Desai, who played a key role in Uttarakhand’s UCC law. The panel has 45 days to submit its report, which will help in drafting a bill. Other members include retired IAS officer CL Meena, advocate RC Kodekar, educationist Daxesh Thakar, and social worker Gita Shroff.

Some opposition parties have criticized the committee for lacking minority representation. Congress spokesperson Manish Doshi argued that the government should focus on economic issues like inflation and unemployment instead of the UCC. AAP leader Isudan Gadhavi raised concerns about its impact on tribal communities.
Gujarat’s Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi assured that tribal customs and traditions would be protected, following Uttarakhand’s model. The government also plans to consult religious leaders and various community representatives before finalizing the bill.
