The will of Ratan Tata, the well-known Indian industrialist, has surprised many. It has come to light that he left over ₹500 crore to an individual not widely known in his close circle. The unexpected beneficiary is Mohini Mohan Dutta, a businessman from Jamshedpur. This information, reported by The Economic Times, has created curiosity about Dutta’s connection with Tata.
Dutta, an entrepreneur in the travel industry, had a long-standing but little-known relationship with Ratan Tata. According to insiders, he was a trusted associate of Tata for many years. His family previously owned a travel agency called Stallion, which later merged with Taj Services, a part of the Taj Group of Hotels. This merger took place in 2013. Before that, the Dutta family controlled 80% of Stallion, while Tata Industries held the remaining stake.

People who knew Tata closely were not aware of his deep connection with Dutta. However, Dutta himself spoke about it at Ratan Tata’s funeral in October 2024. He mentioned that they first met in Jamshedpur when Tata was 24 years old. He described Tata as a person who helped him grow in life.
Dutta was also invited to Ratan Tata’s birth anniversary celebrations in December 2024. The event was held at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in Mumbai and was attended by close family members and associates.
Most of Ratan Tata’s fortune has gone to charitable causes, as he was deeply committed to philanthropy. His half-sisters, who were also named in the will, are reportedly considering donating their share to charity. Tata had earlier established the Ratan Tata Endowment Foundation and the Ratan Tata Endowment Trust to ensure that a significant part of his wealth continues to support social initiatives.
