A huge traffic jam stretching nearly 300 kilometers has blocked roads leading to the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj. Thousands of vehicles, carrying lakhs of pilgrims, have been stuck for hours, unable to move. Many people took to social media, calling it the “world’s biggest traffic jam.”

Pilgrims stranded for hours

The heavy congestion began when an overwhelming number of devotees started traveling towards Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh. The main roads passing through Madhya Pradesh, including areas like Katni, Jabalpur, Maihar, and Rewa, were completely packed. The situation worsened when the Madhya Pradesh police had to stop vehicles in different districts to prevent further chaos.

Eyewitnesses reported that in some areas, it took nearly 10-12 hours to cover just 50 kilometers. Some travelers even claimed they had been stuck in traffic for almost 48 hours. Videos shared online showed a long line of vehicles, with many people stranded far from their destination.

To manage the situation, police officials in Madhya Pradesh started stopping vehicles and asking travelers to find temporary shelters. Announcements were made in districts like Katni, warning people about the severe traffic conditions. Many vehicles were redirected back towards Jabalpur and other nearby cities.

Rewa district authorities stated that the number of devotees heading towards Prayagraj is not decreasing, making it difficult to clear the roads. The Prayagraj administration and MP police are working together to allow movement in a controlled manner. Officials have also arranged food, water, and temporary shelters for those stuck on the highways.

Meanwhile, political leaders, including MP BJP president VD Sharma, urged local party workers to help stranded pilgrims. He requested them to provide food, water, and shelter for devotees wherever needed.

The Maha Kumbh Mela, which started on January 13 and will end on February 26, has already drawn over 40 crore visitors. With more pilgrims expected in the coming days, authorities are trying to prevent further traffic congestion.
