A serious road accident in Thailand’s Prachinburi province has resulted in the death of 18 people. The incident happened when a tour bus lost control while traveling downhill. According to police reports, the brakes of the vehicle failed, causing the driver to lose control. The bus then overturned and fell into a ditch.
The victims were adults on a study trip. Rescue teams and medical workers rushed to the accident site, which is about 155 km from Bangkok. Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra expressed her condolences and assured that an investigation is underway. She warned that legal action would be taken if safety violations were found.
Thailand has a high number of road accidents, ranking ninth globally in road traffic deaths, as per a 2023 WHO report. Weak enforcement of safety rules and poor road conditions contribute to frequent accidents. In a similar incident last year, a school bus caught fire due to a gas cylinder leak, killing 23 people, including 16 students. The Prime Minister emphasized the need for stricter vehicle inspections to prevent such tragedies in the future.
