U.S. President Donald Trump has accepted an invitation from King Charles for a state visit to the United Kingdom. This makes him the first elected leader in modern history to be hosted twice for a state visit by a British monarch. The invitation was personally handed over by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer during a meeting at the White House.

A special invitation

Before their formal discussions, which included topics like Ukraine and global security, Starmer gave Trump a letter from King Charles. Trump read it immediately, jokingly confirming that it had the King's signature, which he later described as "beautiful." Starmer emphasized how unique the invitation was, calling it "unprecedented." Trump responded quickly, saying, "The answer is yes," and confirmed that he and First Lady Melania Trump would attend. He also praised the UK, calling it a "fantastic country."

Trump's first state visit to the UK took place in June 2019, when Queen Elizabeth II welcomed him for a grand three-day event. During that visit, he attended a state banquet, had a private lunch with the Queen, and met Prince Charles. He also visited the UK in 2018, when he had tea with the Queen at Windsor Castle. However, during that meeting, he was criticized for not following royal protocol by walking ahead of the Queen during a military inspection.

His past visits to Britain drew large protests, with his 2018 visit requiring 10,000 police officers and costing over 14 million pounds for security. Despite this, he has now been invited back for another official visit, further strengthening U.S.-UK relations.
