Punjab Police have increased security in the Malwa region to stop farmers from marching toward Chandigarh. The police have set up barricades in Mansa, Bathinda, and Faridkot districts. Farm union leaders are also being taken into preventive custody to maintain law and order.
Heavy police presence in Malwa
On Wednesday morning, Punjab Police placed barricades along highways and roads in the Malwa region, covering Mansa, Bathinda, and Faridkot districts. The goal was to prevent farmers from reaching Chandigarh to protest against the state government. Officials confirmed that security was tightened to stop any disruptions.
The protest is being led by various farm unions, including the Bhartiya Kisan Union (Ekta-Ugrahan) and Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM). Sources revealed that police teams were stopping vehicles and checking them to identify and detain farm union activists trying to travel to Chandigarh. So far, the police have managed to prevent the farmers from blocking any roads or causing traffic issues.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Bathinda range, Harjeet Singh, stated that barricades were placed at several locations in Mansa and Bathinda districts. On Tuesday night, police attempted to take BKU (Ekta-Ugrahan) leader Jhanda Singh Jethuke into preventive custody, but he managed to escape. Teams are now searching for him.

Faridkot Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Pragya Singh said that police teams were instructed to ensure that no one disturbs public movement. Officers have been deployed at key locations to monitor the situation.
She also mentioned that people were being detained to maintain peace, but so far, there was no report of traffic disruptions. Security forces are continuing their efforts to stop the farmers’ protest from reaching the state capital.
