Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has called for the development of the Delhi Vidhan Sabha as a "model" Assembly, encouraging the newly elected Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) to improve their skills and use modern technology like Artificial Intelligence (AI). Birla made these remarks while inaugurating a two-day orientation programme for Delhi MLAs at the Vidhan Sabha on Tuesday.

Birla stressed that the people of Delhi have high expectations from the legislators and the new government. He explained that Delhi is like a "Mini India" because it represents the diversity of people from different states, languages, cultures, and religions. He said that the government and MLAs have a big responsibility to address the issues faced by the people and to ensure proper infrastructure development and social welfare.

The orientation programme aims to help MLAs understand how to meet public expectations effectively. Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Leader of Opposition Atishi, Deputy Speaker Mohan Singh Bisht, and several MPs from Delhi attended the event.

Birla emphasized that MLAs should become better speakers and listeners. He encouraged them to take part actively in the legislative process and understand the issues faced by the public. He also suggested that AI should be used to improve communication, increase efficiency, and build capacity in the Assembly's functioning.

Birla said that the Delhi Assembly should be an example for other states by using technology to make legislative work more efficient. He suggested that MLAs should focus on learning legislative drafting and understanding parliamentary rules and regulations to improve their performance.

Call for accountability and transparency

Birla advised MLAs to be innovative in finding solutions to problems in their respective constituencies. He highlighted the importance of transparency, honesty, and accountability in governance.

He said that the Assembly should serve as a platform for healthy debates and discussions, even if disagreements arise. Birla added that the goal should always be to find solutions through dialogue and consensus.

Birla also mentioned that over the next five years, the new government should work towards solving the issues faced by Delhi's residents. He encouraged the MLAs to listen to the concerns of the public and work towards improving infrastructure, healthcare, education, and social welfare.

The Parliamentary Research and Training Institute for Democracies (PRIDE) conducted the orientation programme. It focused on parliamentary rules, legislative practices, and skill development for the new members.

In the recent Delhi Assembly elections held in February, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a majority by winning 48 out of 70 seats. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won 22 seats. Birla stated that the MLAs should use this opportunity to bring positive change to Delhi by working together despite political differences.
