From January 19, India and South Africa will play a three-match One-Day International series. Rohit Sharma has been ruled out of the series due to injury. KL Rahul will take over as the team’s skipper in his absence. In Rohit’s absence, KL Rahul was a foregone conclusion. Jasprit Bumrah’s appointment as vice-captain, on the other hand, surprised no one. But it’s evident today that the selectors have rewarded Jasprit Bumrah for his consistency across all three formats.
The selection panel was influenced by Pat Cummins’ recent elevation to Australia captain when making this decision, which is all the more intriguing given that two proven IPL captains Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant were in the running to replace KL Rahul in the bilateral series against South Africa.
Former national selector and ex-India wicketkeeper Saba Karim has backed Rishabh Pant and said, “I was extremely surprised, I was not expecting Jasprit Bumrah to be made the vice-captain. I was hoping that Rishabh Pant had more chances to be made the vice-captain because he is also a multi-format player, he plays all the three formats.”
