Alan Rickman, who portrayed the enigmatic Severus Snape in the Harry Potter films, was aware of the Potions Master's fate before any of his co-stars. During the Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return To Hogwarts reunion, Daniel Radcliffe and Gary Oldman talked about how Rickman had the "inside scoop" on where the tale was going but never told anybody else.

Gary Oldman expressed his desire for the "grand picture" while addressing his own character, Sirius Black. Sirius was presented as a mass killer and a traitor in the third film, but as the book went, it was shown that he was truly decent. When asked if he knew what would happen to his character, Radcliffe said, "Just Rickman." Rickman was in charge of the situation.

Rickman told Empire magazine that he did not want to resume the role since he believed it was little more than an immovable masquerade. Author JK Rowling, on the other hand, has revealed the key to her character, as well as the origins of the word "always.

"Severus Snape looks to be a dangerous bully in the first few novels, whom Headmaster Albus Dumbledore trusts for an incomprehensible reason. He was eventually shown to be acting as a double agent at great personal risk in order to safeguard Harry from Lord Voldemort, as he had "always" loved Harry's mother. Rickman told HitFix in 2011 that Rowling had given him "a little piece of magic."
