Sarabjit Kaur, a BJP municipal councilor, was elected as the new Chandigarh Municipal Corporation mayor on Saturday, defeating Anju Katyal of the Aam Aadmi Party by by one vote in a direct election. There were 28 votes cast out of a total of 36, with seven Congress councilors and the lone Shiromani Akali Dal councilor refusing.
Sarabjit Kaur received 14 votes, Anju Katyal received 13, and one vote was declared invalid. AAP councilors caused a disturbance in the House as the results were announced. Police had to come in to remove them.
In the Chandigarh mayoral election, the voting is done by the winning councilors and the MP. The Congress and Akali Dal did not participate. Not a single one of the seven councillors of the Congress cast their vote. Along with this, an Akali Dal councilor didn’t vote. Despite the fact that both AAP and the BJP were equal with 14 votes, one vote in AAP’s favor was later declared invalid, allowing the BJP candidate to win.
