Last week, the Election Commission of India annulled actor Sonu Sood's designation as Punjab's "state icon," state Chief Electoral Officer S Karuna Raju said on Friday, citing the Bollywood star's voluntary resignation since a family member was running in the next assembly elections.
The Election Commission of India named Sood the state's "icon" over a year ago.
On January 4, the ECI removed Sood's designation as a "state symbol" of Punjab, according to Punjab's Chief Electoral Officer S Karuna Raju.
Last November, Sood stated that his sister Malvika was planning to enter politics, but he had no such aspirations for himself.
