Arizona's Sweltering Heat Endangers Saguaro Cactuses at Desert Botanical Garden

The scorching heat in Arizona has become a significant concern for the beloved Saguaro cactuses in the Desert Botanical Garden.The region has been facing an intense heatwave, with temperatures reaching a scalding 110 degrees for an astonishing 28 days in a row. As a result, the Saguaro cactuses are under immense stress, and some are even collapsing or losing limbs.

Heat Conditions

The Chief Science Officer, Kimberlie McCue, stated that the cactuses have never experienced such extreme conditions before. The soaring temperatures and lack of seasonal monsoons have taken a toll on these heat-sensitive plants. McCue's team has been witnessing a distressing sight as numerous cactuses are succumbing to the harsh weather, leading to substantial losses in their population.

Saguaro cactuses are renowned for their impressive height, reaching up to 40 feet, making them one of the tallest cactuses in the United States. However, the relentless heat in Phoenix, Arizona, is pushing these magnificent plants to their limits. Kimberlie McCue emphasized that while Saguaros are adapted to heat and aridity, there's a breaking point beyond which they cannot survive.

Temperatures in Arizona

The situation is slightly less severe in neighboring Tucson, where temperatures are a bit lower compared to Phoenix. Climate analysts reveal that Phoenix experiences temperatures up to 8 degrees higher than the surrounding areas. This stark difference is significant and contributes to the plight of the Saguaro cactuses in the city.

The extreme heat is suffocating and dehydrating the cactuses, making them more vulnerable to insect infestations and infections. These cactuses play a crucial role in their ecosystem, performing gas exchange during the night and providing essential carbon dioxide for daytime photosynthesis. But the scorching temperatures in Phoenix disrupt these vital processes, adversely affecting the overall health and resilience of the cactuses.
