Army refuses, Hasina flees

Bangladesh Army declines to quell protests, prompting Sheikh Hasina's flight to India

The day before Sheikh Hasina fled Bangladesh, the army decided not to suppress protests. Army Chief Gen. Waker-Uz-Zaman met with his generals and chose not to enforce a curfew by firing on civilians. This decision, conveyed to Hasina, showed she no longer had the army's support.

Hasina's sudden exit

Hasina's 15-year rule ended abruptly on Monday when she fled to India amid violent protests. The protests had escalated, with 91 people killed and hundreds injured. The army's refusal to enforce the curfew left Hasina vulnerable. Facing massive unrest, she decided to leave Bangladesh. Hasina and her sister flew to India, with India agreeing to her temporary stay. Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus called on India to reconsider its foreign policy, emphasizing the need for better governance in Bangladesh.

Hasina's departure marks the end of a tumultuous period in Bangladesh's political history.
