Arvind Kejriwal sentenced to 14-day jail term in Tihar prison no. 2

Delhi's Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been sent to Tihar Prison No. 2 for 14 days leading to discussions in legal and political circles.

Arrest and Controversy

Kejriwal has been taken into Tihar jail's Prison Number 2, where he will be held for 14 days following a court's decision in a money laundering case related to the liquor policy. The court's verdict came after the end of his custody with the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on April 1.

Kejriwal, arrested by the ED on March 21, will be under 24-hour CCTV surveillance and will stay alone in the barrack. Tight security measures have been implemented in the jail premises. His lawyers have requested for him to have certain books during his stay, including the Bhagavad Gita and Ramayan.

Legal Proceedings

During the court hearing, the ED did not seek further remand, citing the Supreme Court's recent judgment in a similar case. The agency expressed concerns about Kejriwal's cooperation, calling his conduct "non-cooperative" and accusing him of misleading the investigation.

The Delhi High Court has directed the ED to file a status report regarding a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that seeks to restrain Kejriwal from issuing orders while in custody. The PIL will be treated as the agency's own representation.

Kejriwal's arrest follows the 'Loktantra Bachao' rally organized by the Opposition INDIA bloc at Ramlila Maidan. Leaders like Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, and others participated. The rally aimed to protest Kejriwal's arrest.
