Assam Floods: 5 lakh affected, 14 dead, situation improves slightly

Assam Flood situation sees slight improvement; over 5 lakh affected, 14 dead

The flood situation in Assam has slightly improved due to reduced rainfall over the past two days. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), 535,246 people across 14 districts are still affected. Nagaon is the hardest hit with over 300,000 people affected, followed by Cachar with over 100,000 affected.

Casualties and response

Since May 28, 14 people have died due to the floods, with three more deaths reported on Sunday. Two of these deaths were in Cachar, and one was in Nagaon. Some individuals are still missing. The ASDMA reports that major rivers, including the Brahmaputra and Barak, are now flowing below danger levels, and sluice gates have been opened to release stagnant waters.

Assam's Water Resource Minister, Pijush Hazarika, is visiting the affected areas and overseeing restoration work. He assures that adequate support is being provided to flood victims, and damaged areas are being repaired quickly.

Home Minister Amit Shah has reviewed the situation and promised sufficient assistance. A National Disaster Response Force team has arrived in Barak Valley and will stay until the situation normalizes.

Impact and relief efforts

Massive landslides in Dima Hasao district, caused by heavy rainfall, have disrupted rail and road connectivity between Barak Valley and the rest of Assam. The railway tracks have been repaired, allowing some stranded trains to pass.

Around 40,000 people from 13 flood-affected districts are staying in 275 relief camps, with Cachar district hosting over 22,000 people in the highest number of camps. More than 8,143 hectares of agricultural land are still underwater, which will likely impact future agricultural production.
