BJP files complaint over Rahul Gandhi's comments targeting Modi
BJP lodges formal complaint against Rahul Gandhi for alleged defamatory remarks on PM Modi
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has lodged a formal complaint with the Election Commission of India (ECI) against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for purportedly referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as "panauti" (bad omen) and "jaibkatra" (pickpocket) during a public rally in Rajasthan's Barmer. The BJP condemns Gandhi's comments, labeling them as vicious abuse, character assassination, and an attempt to mislead the public.
Serious allegations prompt formal complaint
In the complaint, the BJP cites sections 123(4) of the Representation of People Act, 1951, along with sections 171G, 504, 505, and 499 of the Indian Penal Code, related to corrupt practices, false statements in connection with an election, intentional insult, statements conducing to public mischief, and defamation, respectively. The model code of conduct is also invoked.

Controversial statements targeting PM Modi
Gandhi allegedly referred to PM Modi as "panauti" in connection with India's loss in the cricket World Cup final. The BJP vehemently opposes this characterization, emphasizing that victory in a game is not determined by the presence of any individual. The complaint also mentions Gandhi's remarks regarding loan waivers for billionaires, asserting that PM Modi has not granted such waivers, and banks are mandated to address Non-Performing Assets (NPA) per the Reserve Bank of India's guidelines.
