K Surendran, the Kerala BJP president and candidate contesting against Rahul Gandhi in the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency, has 242 criminal cases against him. Similarly, another BJP candidate, K S Radhakrishnan, running in the Ernakulam constituency, is facing around 211 cases.
Cases stemming from Sabarimala Protests:
Most of the charges against Surendran and Radhakrishnan are linked to the Sabarimala protests of 2018. These protests erupted following the Kerala government's decision to implement a Supreme Court ruling allowing women's entry into the Sabarimala shrine. BJP leaders argue that many of these cases are filed merely due to their involvement in political activities, such as organizing protests.
