Bombay HC clears Dr. Ali Irani in film rights dispute

Bombay High Court quashes case against Dr. Ali Irani and partner

Dispute over film rights

In a recent development, the Bombay High Court has dismissed an FIR and legal proceedings against Dr. Ali Irani, the former physiotherapist of the Indian cricket team, and his business partner Mehmood Usman Ali. The case, which had been initiated by Bollywood film producer Vijay Mulchandani, came to a close through a mutual settlement.

The dispute stemmed from an agreement in which Mulchandani sold the rights of his 2019 movie 'Yaaram' to Dr. Irani and Ali's company, Don OTT, for Rs 1.25 crore. The movie was subsequently streamed on the Don OTT platform in March 2020. However, Mulchandani alleged that the full payment was never received despite numerous reminders, and some cheques were dishonored.

Amicable resolution

During proceedings, lawyers representing all parties informed the bench of Justices Ajay Gadkari and Sharmila Deshmukh that they had resolved their disputes amicably outside of court. Mulchandani confirmed that he had no further grievances against Dr. Irani and Ali and had no objections to quashing the case.

As part of the resolution, the court ordered both Dr. Irani and Ali to make a charitable contribution of Rs 1 lakh each to the Tata Memorial Hospital within two weeks, as a penalty for consuming the court's time. Failure to comply with this cost directive would result in the revival of the petition against them. Dr. Irani and Ali are required to report their compliance with this order to the high court by October 12.This legal conclusion highlights the significance of amicable resolutions in legal matters and emphasizes the importance of settling disputes outside of the courtroom.
