Can dengue take away life? Have a look into the Cause, Cases and Control

Death-dealing by mosquitos
Chandigarh: 10th June,2023: (Sanyam Aggarwal):: It is said that mosquitoes are the greatest mass murderers on planet Earth. How much weight does this statement carry? In case of an infected aedes bitting humans it is no less that being at the stake of life and death where the closer end is to be killed by this small insect spreading dengue like a forest fire.

Where and how?
Studies have shown it is prevalent in many tropical and subtropical regions around the world and the spread of dengue depends on several factors ranging from rainfall patterns to mosquito control measures.

Worsening Number of Cases -
It is shocking that ever year approximately 400 million people get infected with dengue, the other 100 million people get sick from infection and 40,000 die from severity and torment of this virus.

The rates have hiked from the year 2019 to 2022. Following are the cases and deaths of last four years as per the National Center for Vector- borne Diseases Control ( NCVDC) reports :

               Cases    Deaths
2019    157351     166
2020    44585        56
2021    193245      346
2022    233251      303

Caution! Monsoon is mosquito breeding season -
In india this dangerous disease can be evidently seen from from June to September. During the monsoon season, Aedes aegypti mosquito starts breeding at a tremendous rate and by using accumulated water stagnation as a medium, it starts to transmit the dengue virus at a very large scale.

Top 5 States that are a ground to this life threatening viral -
Reportedly, cases across several states in India vary in their intensity throughout the year but these five states namely Delhi, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and West Bengal have significantly experienced massive spread of the disease.

Government initiatives and operations -
 1. 15 advisories were issued at different intervals to States/UTs for prevention and control of dengue in 2021. This included technical guidelines to control and prevent dengue
   2. Along with those measure a practical implementation can be seen by GOI as they provide free diagnostic facilities through 713 Sentinel Surveillance Hospitals and 17 Apex Referral laboratories approved across India. It can be seen that additional funds have also been provided to many states for procurement of NS1 kits in case of earlydiagnosis.
  3. National Health Mission of India (NHMI) provides financial support to states/UTs for dengue case management, vector control activities, training support, awareness activities, etc.

Self-Prevention schemes -
A sense of management, control and prevention can be created among masses at a local level by :
1. Mosquito repellent/ nets
2. Community awareness + cleaning
3. Protective clothes
4. Eliminate mosquito breeding sites

As the above data evidentially depicts figures of fatalities and death that can occur because of dengue it is important for humans to stay protected and create a safe environment as this viral has no treatment although symptoms can be controlled. So prevention is better than repenting and having no cure at all.
