Chandigarh plans Zero Waste Modern Food Street

Chandigarh Smart City Limited (CSCL) has launched a significant project to create a sustainable and eco-friendly space for non-motorised traffic, while also promoting healthy food choices and reducing waste. Named the Zero Waste Modern Food Street, this initiative aims to serve as a model for sustainable urban development.

Project details and features

Funded by the National Health Mission of the Indian government with a budget of ₹1.17 crore, the project is slated for completion within the next six months. The Zero Waste Modern Food Street will boast several notable features including reconstructed flooring, shaded benches, informative display boards, a dedicated cycle track, decorative lighting, well-maintained landscaping, enhanced security with CCTV cameras, twin dustbins for efficient waste management, and a water ATM for public convenience.

CSCL CEO Anindita Mitra highlighted the project's focus on promoting eco-friendly practices and healthy food choices. The initiative aims to create a sustainable environment by reducing waste and promoting reusable materials. The rejuvenated food street will also be designed to be a zero-plastic zone, accommodating differently-abled individuals, and encouraging the use of non-motorised transport.

Community support and engagement

Mitra urged residents and visitors alike to support the initiative and actively contribute to maintaining a zero-waste environment. She emphasized the importance of community engagement and collaboration in ensuring the success of the project. Area councillor Saurabh Joshi echoed Mitra's sentiments, stressing the significance of community involvement in the project's implementation and sustainability.
