Chinese Premier emphasizes vast potential in China-Ireland relations

Chinese Premier Li Qiang identifies 'Huge Potential' in strengthening ties with Ireland

Chinese Premier Li Qiang expressed optimism about the "huge potential" in relations with Dublin during his visit to Ireland. The premier, on the first high-ranking Chinese official visit since 2015, met with Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar and President Michael D Higgins to discuss global issues, emphasizing close ties and collaboration. China declared a unilateral visa-free policy for Irish citizens to promote exchanges between the two nations, extending a similar measure taken with Switzerland, France, Germany, and Italy.

High-level meetings:

Li's visit marked a significant diplomatic engagement, aiming to strengthen bilateral relations and discuss global matters, including trade and the international trading system.
Both leaders highlighted the growing economic relations between China and Ireland, with agreements on reopening China's market to Irish beef exports. China is Ireland's largest trading partner in the Asia-Pacific region. Premier Li urged collaboration to uphold a free and open international trading system, emphasizing the importance of maintaining smooth global industrial and supply chains. China's recent diplomatic efforts reflect its strategy to increase international cooperation and reshape the world order, particularly in the context of a US-led global framework.

Human rights discussions:

While President Higgins raised human rights issues during the meetings, both leaders expressed their commitment to a strong, constructive relationship based on trust, respect, and shared values. Ireland was the only other stop on Li's European trip, where he attended the World Economic Forum in Davos, showcasing China's efforts to engage with global economic and diplomatic forums. Premier Li's assurance on reopening China's market for Irish beef exports follows a temporary halt last year due to an atypical BSE case in Ireland. Irish Prime Minister Varadkar emphasized the importance of frank and respectful dialogue, acknowledging that agreements might not be reached on every matter but highlighting the significance of open communication. China's diplomatic outreach and visa-free travel gestures underscore efforts to foster international relationships, enhance economic ties, and contribute to a reshaping of global dynamics.
