Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced the forthcoming introduction of a green hydrogen policy in the state. This announcement was made during a high-level meeting held in Lucknow, where CM Adityanath reiterated the government's dedication to advancing renewable energy sources as a crucial strategy to combat climate change and global warming.
Green hydrogen, known for its clean and sustainable energy characteristics, is envisioned as a key contributor to achieving the ambitious goal of net-zero pollution. CM Adityanath has directed the Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA) to craft an effective policy, grounded in a comprehensive assessment of the central government's green hydrogen policy. The chief minister underlined the need for an inclusive approach, involving all stakeholders to ensure that investors and users gain maximum advantages from this policy.
Leveraging Uttar Pradesh's water resources for Green Hydrogen production
Highlighting the pivotal role of water in green hydrogen production, CM Adityanath emphasized that Uttar Pradesh, with its extensive river network, has the potential to become a major green hydrogen producer at the national level. He proposed a collaborative effort between UPNEDA and the irrigation department to establish water reservoirs in proximity to rivers. These reservoirs would harness rainwater for the sustainable production of green hydrogen.

Incentivizing Green Hydrogen ventures
Further underscoring the significance of green hydrogen, CM Adityanath instructed officials to provide substantial incentives to companies actively engaged in green hydrogen initiatives. The Global Investors Summit (GIS) held in 2023 witnessed Uttar Pradesh receiving investment proposals worth ₹2.73 lakh crore from 20 companies interested in establishing units dedicated to green hydrogen. These units, once operational, hold the potential to generate over 60,000 employment opportunities. CM Adityanath reaffirmed the government's unwavering commitment to realizing the objectives outlined in all Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) inked during GIS-2023.
A path towards sustainable development
CM Adityanath's emphasis on incentivizing green hydrogen projects and aligning them with state development objectives is a clear indicator of Uttar Pradesh's commitment to fostering renewable energy sources, reducing environmental pollution, and actively participating in India's transition to clean energy solutions. The utilization of green hydrogen, produced through sustainable energy sources, is poised to play a pivotal role in realizing these overarching goals.
