'Will PM Modi call Vinesh Phogat?': Congress questions after her Paris Olympics victory

Vinesh Phogat became the first Indian woman to reach the Olympics final in wrestling after defeating Cuba's Yusneylys Guzman 5-0 in the semi-final. Earlier, she had defeated Tokyo 2020 champion Yui Susaki of Japan in the quarterfinals, marking Susaki's first loss in 82 international matches. Vinesh will compete for the gold medal on August 7 at the Paris Olympics.

Political reactions and past protests

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh took to social media to congratulate Vinesh Phogat and questioned if Prime Minister Narendra Modi would call her to apologize for the Delhi Police's treatment during the 2023 wrestlers' protest. The protest was against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the then-Wrestlers' Federation of India (WFI) chief, who was accused of sexual harassment by several female wrestlers.

Top wrestlers, including Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia, held demonstrations at Delhi's Jantar Mantar demanding action against Singh. In May 2023, Vinesh and other wrestlers were detained by the Delhi Police while marching to the new Parliament building. Later, they attempted to throw their medals into the Ganges but were stopped by a farmers' leader. On July 11, the Delhi court began the trial against Singh, who has pleaded not guilty to charges of sexual harassment and intimidation.
