Congress to announce the CM's name in the near future

Rahul Gandhi said on Thursday that the Congress will name a chief minister candidate for the upcoming Punjab Assembly Election 2022, after both Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu urged Rahul Gandhi to name a chief ministerial candidate ahead of the polls. However, Rahul Gandhi stated that the choice will have to be made by the party’s workers.

“Two individuals can’t lead, you see. Only one person will take the lead. Both of them guaranteed me that whomever becomes the CM face will receive assistance from the other. I was paying attention to them. I was overjoyed. Then I realized that they are both committed to the party, which is more than just a political party “According to Rahul Gandhi.

On the first day of Rahul Gandhi’s election campaign in Punjab, he answered the most important question: whether the Congress will choose Sidhu as Chief Minister or Channi if the party maintains the state. Despite the obvious tension between Channi and Sidhu, they put on a display of goodwill, with Channi hugging Sidhu and declaring that they are not fighting.

“People say there is a fight between us. Announce the chief minister face for Punjab polls and we will stand united, Rahul Gandhi ji,” Charanjit Singh Channi said as Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was also present at the gathering.

The Congress has no choice but to name a chief ministerial candidate for the Punjab elections. After a day of meetings in Amritsar and Jalandhar, Rahul Gandhi tweeted to confirm this.

The reason is straightforward. Punjab has a tradition of running for office under the leadership of a chief minister. Even the Aam Aadmi Party has been pushed to choose a candidate, so the Congress can’t be any different. In fact, Captain Amarinder Singh compelled Rahul Gandhi to name him as the party’s candidate mere days before the election in 2017.

The Congress avoided it this time because there is a lot of infighting in the party. Furthermore, after promoting Charanjit Singh Channi as a Dalit face, removing him and replacing him with someone else might lead to charges of playing the caste card. If Channi is removed, the party’s Dalit votes in Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka, where elections are near, could suffer.

Navjot Singh Sidhu, on the other hand, was promoted to state unit chief with the promise of becoming chief minister at some point. Gandhi’s siblings are behind him. He has even taken on his own party in the name of fulfilling the Congress’s poll promises.

The Congress expects that by making Sidhu the face of the campaign, he will be able to garner votes from both Jat Sikhs and Hindus. If he is chosen, Channi might eventually become the party’s state unit president.

It won’t be easy, though. As a result, the party will consult with MLAs about who should be the next chief minister. According to sources, Rahul is expected to return to Punjab in a week and may announce the CM candidate at a rally.

Gandhi was welcomed at the Amritsar airport by Channi, Sidhu, and deputy chief ministers Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and O P Soni.

The Congress has announced 109 candidates for the Punjab Assembly elections on February 20. Candidates for the remaining eight seats have yet to be declared.
