Delhi Airport roof collapse: 1 dead, departures suspended

Roof collapse at Delhi Airport's Terminal 1 leaves one dead, halts all departures

One person died and six others were injured when the roof at Delhi Airport’s Terminal 1 collapsed around 5 am due to heavy rainfall. The incident also buried taxis stationed nearby and damaged four vehicles. All departures from Terminal 1 have been temporarily suspended as a precautionary measure.

Rescue and response efforts

Emergency response teams from Delhi police, fire services, CISF, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are at the scene conducting rescue operations. The injured have been evacuated to hospitals for medical treatment. Union Minister of Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu is personally overseeing the situation and has instructed airlines to assist affected passengers.

Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) confirmed that the collapse occurred at the old Departure forecourt due to the heavy rain. As a result, check-in counters at Terminal 1 are closed, and flight operations, particularly by IndiGo, have been significantly disrupted. IndiGo and SpiceJet have issued helpline numbers and advised passengers to check their flight statuses before heading to the airport.

Apologies and measures

A spokesperson for DIAL expressed regret over the disruption caused by the incident and assured that all necessary assistance is being provided to those affected. The airport management apologized for any inconvenience caused to passengers and assured ongoing efforts to restore normal operations.

Both airlines continue to update their customers through their official channels regarding flight cancellations, alternate options, and refund processes.
