Seventh Delhi Assembly ends; Speaker highlights milestones of five-year term

The Seventh Delhi Legislative Assembly wrapped up its five-year journey on Wednesday, holding its 74th and final session. The term began on February 24, 2020, and now concludes ahead of elections set for February 2025.

Legislative highlights

During its tenure, the Assembly achieved significant milestones. A total of 1,095 questions were addressed during Question Hour, while 19 committee reports and 26 Bills were passed. Additionally, members raised 702 special mentions, engaged in 39 short-term discussions, and introduced 13 motions. Four government resolutions and 14 other motions were also approved.

Reflecting on the Assembly's work, Speaker Ram Niwas Goel described the session as “emotional and historic.” He emphasized the importance of smooth House functioning, highlighting that ample opportunities were provided for members to express views and discuss public concerns.
Speaker Goel, sharing his thoughts, said he had served impartially, ensuring fairness for both the ruling party and the opposition. He noted the challenges faced as a Union Territory Assembly with limited powers but praised the Assembly's accomplishments.

Goel expressed gratitude to all MLAs for their cooperation over the years. He apologized if anyone felt hurt during proceedings, attributing it to his responsibility of adhering to the rules.

As the Assembly adjourned sine die, Goel wished all members success in their political futures, acknowledging the upcoming elections. Members commemorated the occasion with a group photo, marking the end of an era. With elections approaching, Delhi's political landscape is set for a new phase. Parties are preparing to present fresh visions for governance in the next five years, aiming to secure the trust of voters. This concludes the Seventh Assembly's impactful journey, leaving a foundation for future leaders to build upon.
