Delhi woman sentenced for killing daughters
Delhi Court sentences woman to life for smothering her two minor daughters to death
A Delhi court has sentenced 32-year-old Leelawati to life imprisonment for killing her two young daughters in February 2018. The judge called the crime “cold-blooded” and one of the “rarest of rare” cases. Leelawati smothered her five-year-old and five-month-old daughters on February 20, 2018. She also has two surviving children, a seven-year-old daughter and a two-year-old son.
Court's decision
Additional Sessions Judge Sachin Jain said the crime deeply shocked both the court and the community. The judge noted that mothers are typically viewed as nurturing and self-sacrificing, making Leelawati’s actions even more shocking. The court chose not to impose the death penalty, considering the potential impact on her surviving children and the possibility of Leelawati’s rehabilitation.

In addition to the life sentence, Leelawati was fined ₹10,000. The court decided against compensating the victims’ family, as the convicted mother was considered the "culprit" and not eligible for such benefits. The judge’s decision took into account both the severe nature of the crime and the potential for future rehabilitation.
