Delhi University teachers demand urgent attention on salary and pension crisis

Demanding Fairness: Delhi University Teachers Rally for Swift Action on Salary and Pension Issues

A plea has been made by a group of 10 Delhi University (DU) faculty members, including members of the university's academic and executive councils, urging Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh to take immediate action to tackle the prevailing "extensive salary and pension crises in certain colleges."

The concerned faculty members emphasized that this issue extends beyond permanent and ad hoc teachers, affecting guest teachers as well, who have not received payment for the past five months.

SALARY DELAYS

Expressing deep concern, faculty members have raised the issue of delayed salary disbursal, particularly for the month of June, as the month of July begins. This delay has resulted in accumulated dues of over a month, leading to substantial hardships for teachers who are facing difficulties in meeting their financial responsibilities.

In a recent development, teachers wrote a letter to Dean of Colleges Balaram Pani, highlighting the non-payment of ad-hoc teachers in Dayal Singh College and Gargi College for the past three months.

ROOT CAUSES

The letter emphasized the necessity of segregating the salary and pension categories of ad hoc teachers and contractual employees from those of permanent faculty members.

This mixing of categories, combined with the inclusion of pension-related concerns, has contributed to the current salary and pension crises.

The faculty members stressed that their previous appeals on this matter have been overlooked, causing undue hardships for their fellow colleagues.

OUTSTANDING REMUNERATIONS AND PENSIONS

The letter further drew attention to the prolonged pending remunerations of guest teachers, which have exceeded one month in various colleges.

Furthermore, retired teachers and employees have experienced delays in receiving their pensions, with partial payments being made in certain instances.

The faculty members emphasized the pressing necessity for immediate actions to be implemented, as the financial challenges have escalated to a crisis level, no longer remaining as isolated incidents, but instead becoming systemic issues.

APPEAL FOR PROMPT RESOLUTION

The collective of Delhi University teachers made a sincere appeal to Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh, urging him to promptly and decisively address the salary and pension crises. They underscored that the challenges faced by faculty members have permeated the university, demanding immediate attention and remedial actions from the administration.

Resolving these critical issues will not only alleviate the financial burdens on teachers but also establish a supportive and conducive environment for their academic endeavors.
