Vinay Sapru on Salman Khan’s help: ‘He did it without hesitation’

Sanam Teri Kasam Director Vinay Sapru reveals how Salman Khan came to their rescue

The romantic film Sanam Teri Kasam has found new success after its re-release in cinemas. Originally released in 2016, the movie starred Harshvardhan Rane and Mawra Hocane. Despite having a good story and music, it did not perform well at the box office due to a lack of promotion.

Director Vinay Sapru, who made the film along with Radhika Rao, recently shared how Bollywood superstar Salman Khan helped them during a difficult time. He expressed his deep gratitude for Salman’s support, which came at a very critical moment before the film’s release.

Struggles before the release

In an interview with DNA, Vinay Sapru explained why Sanam Teri Kasam failed in its first release. He said that he and his team worked very hard on the film and were confident that they had made a good movie. However, the studio handling the film’s release did not give it proper promotion.

Actors Harshvardhan Rane and Mawra Hocane would visit the studio office every day, hoping for some promotional work. But nothing happened. When the director asked them about their efforts, they said they just sat at the studio the whole day. Even though the film had great songs, no one was aware of its release.

The situation became worse when one studio backed out, leaving the filmmakers in a tough spot. They had no proper way to create buzz or attract the audience. That’s when Vinay decided to approach Salman Khan for help.

Vinay Sapru recalled his conversation with Salman Khan just a few days before the movie’s release. He told Salman about the film, and the superstar was shocked to learn that it was coming out in just four days with no publicity.

Salman asked, “Why didn’t you come to Bigg Boss for promotions?” After listening to Vinay’s struggles, Salman immediately asked how he could help. Without any hesitation, he agreed to tweet the trailer of Sanam Teri Kasam, helping the film reach more people.

Vinay was deeply moved by Salman’s generosity and friendship. He said that Salman’s kindness at such a critical moment showed the true meaning of friendship.

The Film’s performance

Sanam Teri Kasam was made on a budget of ₹14 crore, but it did not recover its costs at the box office. It earned only ₹9.1 crore during its initial run, making it a commercial failure.

However, the film developed a strong fan following over the years, leading to its re-release on February 7. This time, it performed much better.

According to reports, the film’s re-release had the biggest opening weekend for a Bollywood re-release. On Monday alone, it earned ₹3-3.25 crore, taking its total earnings to ₹18.50 crore—more than double its original box office collection.

This new success has given Sanam Teri Kasam a fresh lease on life, proving that a good film can find its audience even years later.
