Shania Twain reveals past abuse that made her struggle with womanhood
Shania Twain, the famous country singer, has opened up about her difficult past. She spoke about how she faced abuse when she was young, which made her feel uncomfortable about being a woman. In an interview with Us Weekly, the 59-year-old singer shared how these experiences affected her self-image.
Twain revealed that she wanted to be strong enough to protect herself. She even told her mother that she wanted to be a bodybuilder. She believed that if she looked tough and strong, no one would dare to touch her inappropriately.
Feeling uncomfortable as a woman
Shania Twain shared that she was insecure about her body from a young age. She said she was touched inappropriately many times during her childhood, which made her feel unsafe in her own skin. She admitted that these experiences made her "hate being a woman."
The five-time Grammy winner explained that she wished she could change her appearance to avoid being a target. She hated having a feminine body and wished to be as strong as a man so no one could harass her.
Twain recalled a conversation with her mother, where she was asked what she wanted to be when she grew up. She immediately answered, “A bodybuilder.” She felt that if she looked like a big, strong man, people would not mess with her.

She also talked about how body image standards in her youth made things worse. The models she saw in magazines were very thin, and she believed that was the ideal beauty standard. Since she did not fit that look, she struggled with her self-esteem even more.
Overcoming her fears
As she grew older, Twain started to see herself differently. She said that working in the fashion and entertainment industry helped her accept her body. When she saw herself in stylish clothes, she realized that being a woman was not a weakness.
One of her most famous songs, Man! I Feel Like a Woman!, was inspired by this change in perspective. She described the song as a celebration of her womanhood. Writing and performing the song made her feel empowered and safe.
Twain ended the interview by sharing that she no longer lets her past define her. She has found confidence in herself and hopes her story will inspire others facing similar struggles.
