Tragic florida bus crash claims eight lives, leaves dozens injured

Early Tuesday morning in north central Florida, a devastating bus accident occurred, resulting in the deaths of eight migrant workers and critically injuring at least eight others.

The crash involved a 2010 International Bus carrying 53 migrant workers and a 2001 Ford Ranger truck on State Road 40, located about 45 miles south of Gainesville. According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the collision caused the bus to veer off the road, crash through a fence, and overturn.

Casualties and rescue efforts

Marion County Fire Rescue confirmed that eight people lost their lives, while 37 were hospitalized, with eight in critical condition. Among the injured were the company's owner and other workers on their way to a watermelon farm. The injured individuals were promptly transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Contrary to early reports, the tragedy did not involve schoolchildren. The Marion County Sheriff's Office clarified that a Marion County Public Schools bus was utilized to transport the injured from the scene to the hospital. Officials emphasized that the accident solely involved the migrant workers' bus and a truck.

Road closure and investigation

In response to the accident, sections of State Road 40 West were blocked off as Florida officials initiated an investigation into the incident. The closure is expected to last for most of the day, with detours in place for travelers. The Sheriff's Office urged motorists to plan alternative routes and exercise caution while driving in the area.
