Delhi's traffic gridlock: G20 summit rehearsal causes commuter chaos

On Tuesday, commuters in central Delhi encountered massive traffic jams due to a rehearsal for a motorcade ahead of the upcoming G20 Summit. The Delhi Traffic Police's preparations disrupted road travel, causing significant congestion in various areas.

Traffic chaos in central Delhi

Notable areas severely affected by the traffic chaos included the Outer Ring Road near Indraprastha Park, C-Hexagon, and Sardar Patel Marg. Vehicles found themselves stranded for long distances, leading to frustration among commuters.

Widespread traffic woes

The traffic troubles were not confined to a few locations; commuters also faced difficulties on Africa Avenue Road, near Zakir Hussain College, Sarita Vihar, and the Bhera Enclave underpass. Near the Old Delhi railway station, a broken traffic signal further exacerbated the congestion.

Government criticism

Delhi's minister, Saurabh Bharadwaj, expressed criticism directed at Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena for the city's traffic problems. He questioned the actions of the Delhi Traffic Police and highlighted the inconvenience faced by the city's residents due to the motorcade rehearsal. In addition to the rehearsed motorcade, other incidents added to the traffic woes. The area near Hanuman Mandir at Karol Bagh experienced heavy traffic, while the NH 8 flyover between Mahipalpur and Dhaula Kuan saw slow-moving traffic due to a breakdown of a DTC bus. A long line of vehicles was stuck on the road between CRRI and Arali Village on Mathura Road.

G20 summit in New Delhi

The 18th G20 Heads of State and Government Summit is set to take place in New Delhi, marking the culmination of various G20 processes and meetings held throughout the year. These discussions have involved ministers, senior officials, and civil society representatives. At the end of the New Delhi Summit, G20 leaders are expected to release a declaration reaffirming their commitment to the priorities discussed and agreed upon during various ministerial and working group meetings, providing a significant platform for global cooperation and decision-making.
