G20 summit spurs Himachal tourism

G20 summit in New Delhi boosts tourism in Himachal Pradesh

A welcome resurgence for Himachal Pradesh

The upcoming G20 Summit in New Delhi, scheduled for September 9-10, has brought unexpected delight to the tourism industry in Himachal Pradesh. As the event approaches, residents of Delhi are looking forward to an extended weekend, with many opting to explore the enchanting hill stations of Himachal.

The sudden influx of tourists heading to Himachal has also brought cheers to the local business community. They have reported a substantial increase in hotel bookings and inquiries, providing much-needed relief to Himachal Pradesh, which had been grappling with the aftermath of relentless rains in recent times.

Balbir Singh Vimal, owner of the Rosetum hotel chain, shared his perspective with a source, stating, "Till about July 12, the hotels were nearly empty. Due to the G20, we have received numerous inquiries and bookings for the weekend." He further emphasized the readiness of Himachal Pradesh's infrastructure, lauding the efforts of both the state and the Union government. "Now the roads are open. All hoteliers are prepared to welcome tourists," he added.

Kasauli: A magnet for Delhiites

Hotel owners attribute this surge in tourism to the stringent traffic and movement restrictions imposed by the Delhi government due to security concerns related to the G20 Summit. As Kasauli is the nearest hill station to the national capital, it has become an appealing destination for Delhi residents.

Mohinder Seth, president of Shimla Hotels Association, revealed that hotels already have a 25 percent occupancy, which is expected to skyrocket to 80-90 percent due to attractive packages. He also emphasized how the influx of tourists during this extended weekend offers hope for the local economy, which was severely impacted by torrential rains between July and August.
