GMCH-32 launches epilepsy clinic in Chandigarh, taking strides towards better care

A newly launched epilepsy clinic at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH-32) in Chandigarh has commenced its operations, marking a significant step towards improved care for patients. With its doors open, the clinic welcomed 100 outpatient visits in its first week. The main goal of this initiative is to raise awareness about seizures, commonly known as fits, while ensuring easy access to essential treatment.

Comprehensive care led by Dr. Ishreen Ahuja

Under the guidance of neurologist Dr. Ishreen Ahuja, the epilepsy clinic has been established to cater to patients from the tricity region, which includes Chandigarh, Panchkula, and Mohali. Additionally, it aims to bridge the gap in epilepsy care brought about by the lack of specialists in remote areas of Haryana, Punjab, and Himachal Pradesh.

A multidisciplinary approach to epilepsy care

The clinic operates with a holistic approach by bringing together a team of experts, including neurologists, neuropsychiatrists, radiologists, and neurosurgeons. This comprehensive setup ensures that patients receive comprehensive care for all aspects related to epilepsy. The clinic operates every Wednesday from 9 am to 2 pm.

Dr. Ishreen Ahuja, the head of the neurology unit at GMCH, emphasized the clinic's mission to dispel the stigma surrounding epilepsy. She stated, "Our aim is to combat the stigma around epilepsy by providing accurate diagnosis and treatment." She further stressed the importance of accessible and affordable healthcare, reaching even underserved communities who often rely on commercial private hospitals for such services.

Dr. Ahuja highlighted the clinic's focus on providing specialized guidance and advanced treatment options for patients suffering from various seizure disorders. This includes epilepsy, refractory seizures, and treatment-resistant epilepsy. The clinic's services are designed to improve patients' overall quality of life.

The clinic is equipped with a range of advanced diagnostic tools, including electroencephalography (EEG) investigations. These resources aid the expert team in making well-informed treatment decisions tailored to each patient's needs. Already serving more than 250 patients at GMCH, Dr. Ahuja expressed her desire to extend the accessibility of the clinic's services to a wider population.
