HC seeks records on missing persons in Mahakumbh stampede PIL

Allahabad HC directs advocate to submit all relevant details on missing persons in Mahakumbh Stampede PIL

The Allahabad High Court has asked the petitioner’s advocate to provide all important documents related to missing persons after the Mahakumbh stampede on January 29. The petitioner, Suresh Chandra Pandey, had filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) requesting the formation of a Judicial Monitoring Committee (JMC) to track those who went missing during the tragic incident. The court scheduled the next hearing for February 19, 2025.

Court’s response

A division bench, including Chief Justice Arun Bhansali and Justice Kshitij Shailendra, told the petitioner’s lawyer that the state government could only be involved if there was proper evidence. The petitioner also asked for time to collect newspaper reports and social media videos related to the stampede.

Government's action

The Uttar Pradesh government has already set up a three-member judicial commission led by retired Allahabad High Court judge, Justice Harsh Kumar. This commission will investigate the causes of the stampede and suggest ways to prevent such incidents in the future. However, the petitioner argued that the panel might not focus on tracking the missing persons. The commission has invited the public to share information about the incident.

The case will be heard again on February 19.
