Health Minister Informs Parliament about Studies on Sudden Cardiac Arrests in Youngsters
The Union Health Minister, Mansukh Mandaviya, shared important information with the parliament about ongoing studies on cases of sudden cardiac arrest among young individuals. Some young people have reportedly experienced sudden deaths after recovering from Covid-19, but currently, there isn't enough evidence to confirm the cause of these deaths, as per Minister Mandaviya's statement to the Lok Sabha.
The Health Minister responded to questions raised by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MPs, Ravindra Kushwaha, and Khagen Murmu, who inquired whether there has been an increase in cardiac arrests across the country after Covid-19.
To investigate and understand the concerns related to rising cases of cardiac arrest after Covid-19, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), a leading body for promoting biomedical research, is conducting three different studies. These studies aim to shed light on various aspects of sudden deaths among young adults aged 18 to 45 in India. One of the studies is a multi-centric matched case-control study conducted at approximately 40 hospitals and research centers. It focuses on identifying factors associated with sudden deaths in young adults.
Another study, also multi-centric and matched case-control, is taking place at around 30 COVID-19 clinical registry hospitals. This study aims to determine the effects of the Covid vaccine on thrombotic events among individuals aged 18 to 45 in India during 2022.

In the context of addressing cardiovascular health issues, the Department of Health and Family Welfare under the Centre provides technical and financial support to states and Union Territories through the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NP-NCD). Cardiovascular disease is an integral part of this program.
Other Programmes Introduced
The NP-NCD program aims to strengthen infrastructure, develop human resources, promote health awareness, and conduct population-based screenings for people aged 30 years and above through Ayushman Bharat Health Wellness Centers. Early diagnosis, management, and referrals to appropriate healthcare facilities are also important components of the program. As part of NP-NCD, several district non-communicable disease clinics, district cardiac care units, district day care centers, and community health center non-communicable disease clinics have been established.
To enhance healthcare accessibility and affordability, the government has implemented various measures. Under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY), over 60 crore beneficiaries receive health insurance coverage of Rs. 5 lakhs per family per year for secondary or tertiary care hospitalization.
The treatment packages under the AB-PMJAY are comprehensive, covering various aspects of treatment, including drugs and diagnostic services. Financial assistance is also provided through the Rashtriya Arogya Nidhi (RAN) to families living below the poverty line for their treatment in government hospitals.
Furthermore, the government ensures the availability of quality generic medicines at affordable prices through the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP), in collaboration with state governments. The Affordable Medicines and Reliable Implants for Treatment (AMRIT) Pharmacy stores offer cardiovascular drugs at substantial discounts compared to the Maximum Retail Price.
The Health Minister emphasized that there is a strong focus on addressing cardiovascular diseases in new AIIMS and upgraded institutions under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojna (PMSSY). These measures collectively aim to provide accessible and affordable healthcare to the citizens of India and ensure their well-being.
