Heatwave expected across India during phase 6 of Lok Sabha Elections

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for a heatwave in several northern and northwestern states, including Delhi, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Punjab, and Haryana, until May 28. Most parts of India are suffering from extreme heat as the sixth phase of voting in the Lok Sabha elections approaches on May 25.

Rajasthan heatwave conditions

Rajasthan is experiencing severe heat, with temperatures reaching 49 degrees Celsius in Phalodi. Other high temperatures were recorded in Jaisalmer (48.3°C), Barmer (48.2°C), and Jodhpur (47.6°C). Jaipur reached 42.8 degrees Celsius. Six more deaths were suspected to be due to heat stroke, following five similar deaths the previous day. The state's Disaster Management and Relief Department reported deaths in Balotra, Bhilwara, Bikaner, and Jodhpur.

Delhi and other regions affected

Delhi recorded a high of 41.7 degrees Celsius on Friday, slightly above average for this time of year. The IMD issued a 'yellow' alert for Saturday, forecasting a rise to 44 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature was 30.8 degrees Celsius, with humidity between 42% and 60%.

In Madhya Pradesh, Indore's temperature reached 44.5 degrees Celsius on Thursday, the highest in May in eight years. Measures include shorter red lights at intersections and coolers for power transformers. Chhatarpur's extreme heat is causing residents to stay indoors, and even temple idols are being cooled with fans and coolers.

Jammu and Kashmir's Srinagar experienced its hottest May day in 13 years, with a maximum temperature of 32.2 degrees Celsius. The Met Office predicts isolated heat waves across the Valley for the next five days, with no significant rainfall expected until the end of the month.

Rainfall alert in Kerala

While northern states deal with heatwaves, Kerala is facing heavy pre-monsoon rains. The IMD issued an orange alert for "very heavy rainfall" in Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, and Idukki districts. Over 200 mm of rain was recorded in the last 24 hours, adding to the state's challenges.
