Chandigarh's heritage panel rejects multi-level parking plan at Sukhna Lake

The Chandigarh Heritage Conservation Committee (CHCC) has turned down the UT administration's plan to transform the current parking area in front of the Lake Club into a multi-level parking facility, comprising two basement levels and one ground floor level near Sukhna Lake. Instead, the panel has urged Chandigarh to prepare a new proposal, focusing solely on underground parking, which will then be reviewed by the CHCC subcommittee.

Traffic congestion concerns

The proposal was initiated to address the escalating traffic congestion around Sukhna Lake and Bird Park, which attract a substantial number of tourists and locals, particularly on weekends. Currently, there is limited parking space available for both four-wheelers and two-wheelers at the Lake. The situation has worsened due to the installation of electric vehicle charging stations and public bicycle sharing stands.

During the CHCC meeting on September 14, it was suggested that the existing parking area, originally reserved for Lake Club members, should be transformed into public parking. Sumit Kaur, the chairperson of the CHCC sub-panel, emphasized that the Lake Club building was designed by Le Corbusier at a lower level to preserve the view of the lake from Uttar Marg. Given this historical significance, the panel deemed an above-ground parking facility unsuitable. Instead, they recommended considering underground parking, if required, based on data provided by the municipal corporation and the traffic police department.

Additionally, the proposed cycle track through the Mango Garden in Sector 29 was referred to the CHCC sub-committee for feedback and recommendations. The decision reflects the city's commitment to preserving its heritage and natural beauty while addressing the challenges posed by increasing traffic and tourism around Sukhna Lake.
