Highway collapse in Southwest Sweden sparks rescue effort

Landslide incident

A significant section of a highway in southwest Sweden collapsed overnight, resulting in three individuals being hospitalized with minor injuries. The incident occurred on the motorway connecting Sweden's second-largest city, Gothenburg, and Norway's capital, Oslo, near the town of Stenungsund, approximately 50 kilometers north of Gothenburg along Sweden's west coast.

The hardest-hit area of the landslide measures approximately 150 by 100 meters, but the overall affected area spans around 700 by 200 meters, as reported by the Gothenburg Rescue Services. The landslide impacted around ten vehicles, a wooded area, a business area containing a gas station and a fast-food restaurant.

Rescue and response

Numerous individuals trapped in the affected vehicles were assisted by fire personnel and a helicopter. While several cars and a truck had fallen into holes and cracks created by the landslide, all occupants were successfully rescued.

Specially trained personnel and search dogs are currently conducting a search in the area, with the acknowledgment that further landslides cannot be ruled out.
