How online classes is bridging the education gap in Bihar

Bihar State Education Board (BSEB) released the results of Class 12th the previous week. More than 80 % of students passed the exam out of around 13.5 lakh students who had appeared.

Bihar's public education system has inherent problems, It needs to be highlighted here that, the teaching for Class 12 is dominated by private coaching institutes. There is hardly any government school or college which conducts classes for class 12. Most of the students studying in class 12 are forced to rely on private coaching.  Non-availability of a quality education institute nearby force, the students to migrate to town.

A student coming to town is puzzled by the crowd of the coaching institutes. It is like a shop with each coaching institute boasting of good results and preparation for premier entrance exams. Education in the city is difficult. The NFHS -5 (National Family Health Survey), released in 2020, places Bihar, third place from the bottom in internet usage, with 43.6 per cent, for men. The survey also brings out that with four in five women not using the internet, Bihar is at the bottom of the list with internet used by women.

Having said that, the scenario is seeing improvement as the student community has begun shifting from offline to online education mode. This shift has seen its reflection in rural and interior areas of the state, where the availability of offline classes for the boards is difficult.

The intermediate board exams saw an increase in overall pass percentage from 78 % last year. Those who have managed to pass with distinction have credited their success to YouTube videos available. For instance, one of the district topper Vandana Kumari relied solely on YouTube videos for her studies. She has managed to score ninety per cent plus. Those studying in rural areas of districts with little guidance have used online videos to their advantage.

Online platforms providing free education are slowly proving to be an effective tool and students of Bihar are learning to harness it.
