Impeached S. Korean President Yoon appears in Court

South Korea’s impeached President Yoon faces first criminal trial hearing

South Korea’s impeached President, Yoon Suk Yeol, attended his first court hearing on Thursday, facing charges of insurrection. Prosecutors accuse him of imposing martial law on December 3 in an attempt to take control of the country. His lawyers argue that the investigation was conducted unfairly and have requested his release from jail.

Yoon was brought from Seoul Detention Centre to the court under tight security. His lawyers claim that he never intended to overthrow the government but only wanted to warn against a “legislative dictatorship.” If convicted, he could face years in prison. The court has scheduled the next hearing for March 24.

Meanwhile, Yoon is also facing an impeachment trial in the Constitutional Court, which is in its final phase. If the court removes him from office, a new presidential election must be held within 60 days.
