In Rameswaram, a 108-foot-tall Hanuman statue will be erected

In around two years, a 108-foot-tall statue of Lord Hanuman will be built in Rameswaram, for which the foundation stone was set on Wednesday.

Harish Chander Nanda Education and Charitable Trust has suggested to erect the monument in the temple town because it bears Lord Rama’s footprints, according to a news statement. Thousands of devotees from all over the world travel to the temple town each year to pray at the famed Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple. The Lord Hanuman statue would be the centre of attention here.

The Trust had already placed a statue of Lord Hanuman in Shimla (Himachal Pradesh), which was dedicated in 2010, and was currently preparing to build another in Gujarat. Construction on the statue in Rameswaram is expected to begin in March, with the statue being dedicated to the public in about two years.

Earlier, Trustee Nikil Nanda, former UPSC Secretary R.N. Choubey, and RSS national general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale did a pooja at the site, per the announcement.

On Wednesday, a ceremony was performed to lay the foundation stone for the idol. The other two idols are in Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat, respectively. A location for the fourth idol is being sought.

The stone idol’s construction will begin in March and is scheduled to be completed in two years.

According to a press statement, the foundation ceremony was held in the presence of Dattatreya Hosabale, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s (RSS) all-India general secretary, among others.
