Anurag Thakur predicts India's top-5 Olympic Medal rank by 2047
Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur revealed India's aspirations to host the 2036 Summer Olympics and aims to secure a position among the top five nations for Olympic medal wins by 2047. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Khelo India University Games in Guwahati, Thakur praised Indian athletes for their remarkable performances on the global stage, particularly highlighting their success at the World University Games in China, where they secured 26 medals, earning the country the seventh position worldwide.
Focus on sports infrastructure
Thakur emphasized the significance of university-level games, citing the high percentage of medal-winning athletes from universities in countries like England and the USA. He underscored the government's commitment to strengthening such sporting events and lauded Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's efforts in improving sports infrastructure across the state. Sarma, in turn, highlighted initiatives to enhance sports facilities, including the construction of an international-standard football stadium in Guwahati and the development of stadiums and sports complexes in various districts and assembly constituencies.

Khelo India University Games and regional contributions
The Khelo India University Games, hosted in Assam, symbolize the state's rich sporting heritage, with events spread across seven northeastern states. Sarma appealed to Thakur to consider organizing the National Games in Assam in 2025 or 2026, further bolstering the region's sports culture. Thakur, recognizing the region's significance, especially under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Look East Policy, expressed the government's commitment to supporting and promoting sports in the northeastern states. Additionally, he inaugurated a news production room at the Doordarshan Kendra in Guwahati, aimed at enhancing the center's broadcasting capabilities to provide high-quality services to the people.
