Impressive Surge in Tiger Numbers
India's tiger population has witnessed a remarkable increase, reaching 3,682 tigers in 2022, up from 2,967 in 2018. This almost 24% growth over four years signifies a significant achievement in tiger conservation efforts. The recent figures also surpass the count of 3,167 tigers announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during an event commemorating the 50th anniversary of Project Tiger, a renowned conservation initiative.
In-Depth Census Assessments Lead to Revised Statistics
The rise in tiger numbers is a result of meticulous assessments of census data conducted during the fifth cycle of estimation in 2022. The comprehensive analysis provides a clearer picture of India's tiger population, indicating that the country now houses nearly 75% of the world's total tiger population. These encouraging statistics are highlighted in the "Status of Tigers: Co-Predators & Prey in India-2022" report, unveiled at Uttarakhand's Corbett Tiger Reserve by Union Minister of State for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, Ashwini Kumar Choubey, on International Tiger Day.
A Triumph in Conservation
India's success in increasing its tiger population by almost 24% in just four years is a testament to the nation's dedication to wildlife conservation. The meticulous census assessments and efforts under Project Tiger have contributed to this significant achievement, reinforcing India's position as a global leader in tiger conservation. With nearly three-quarters of the world's tiger population residing within its borders, India's commitment to preserving its rich biodiversity and protecting its iconic wildlife is commendable. As the nation continues its conservation efforts, these positive strides offer hope for the survival and thriving of these majestic creatures for generations to come. International Tiger Day serves as a poignant reminder of the collective responsibility to safeguard these magnificent animals and their natural habitats for the sake of our planet's ecological balance.
