India to sustain Maldives disaster relief efforts after Muizzu assumes office
India's commitment to disaster relief in Maldives remains strong post Muizzu's leadership
Mohammed Muizzu, the President-elect of the Maldives, has declared that the withdrawal of Indian troops from the country is his top priority after winning the election with an "Out India" campaign. He aims to ask Indian troops to leave within a week of his inauguration on November 17. However, it's important to note that the Indian troops were in the Maldives primarily for disaster relief, not for military operations.
India's long-standing relationship with the Maldives
India and the Maldives have a historical and strong relationship dating back to their shared struggle against colonial oppression. India has been a vital partner in providing disaster relief and long-term capacity-building initiatives in the Maldives. This includes humanitarian assistance, medical evacuations, search and rescue missions, and maritime patrolling to combat transnational crimes.

Indian aircraft, equipped with advanced medical equipment and trained personnel, have saved over 500 lives in the last five years through medical evacuations. These aircraft provide crucial support for remote islands with limited medical facilities, ensuring prompt treatment and saving lives. Despite operating in challenging conditions, the Indian aviation teams maintain a high level of serviceability.
Strong bond and mutual respect
The Indian and Maldivian teams share a close working relationship, including friendly sports competitions and cultural events, fostering strong bonds. While the "India Out" campaign may aim to give a negative perception of Indian support, it has been instrumental in saving lives and positively impacting the lives of the Maldivian people.
